During the meeting, Pompeo stressed the need to end violence and protect civilians. "Both must implement a ceasefire and return to substantive negotiations," he said via his personal Twitter account on Friday (23/10).

However, after the meeting no agreement was announced regarding the end of confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Previously, Pompeo had said that the situation regarding the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh was indeed complicated. "This is a complicated diplomatic situation," he said earlier this week.

Previously, Russia had succeeded in encouraging Armenia and Azerbaijan to agree to a ceasefire. But it didn't last long. The battle was on again. The two countries accused each other of being the first to violate the ceasefire.

Since 27 September, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Armenian and Azerbaijani conflicts in the region have actually been going on since the early 1990s.

Territorial disputes began to emerge after the collapse of the Soviet Union. From 1991-1994, fighting between the two countries is estimated to have left 30,000 people dead.

In 1992, The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group was formed. The agency co-chaired by France, Russia and the United States (US) is tasked with mediating and finding a peaceful solution to end the Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict in Nagorno-Karabkah.

A ceasefire was successfully agreed upon in 1994. However, until now the two countries have not agreed to be bound by a peace agreement.
